Restylane

The Restylane® family of fillers is made up of Lyft, Restylane, Silk, Defyne, Refyne, Contour, and Kysse (the newest member).   The Restylane® manufacturing process utilizes two specific technologies: NASHA and XpresHAn.

NASHA technology is used to control the product particle size and is incorporated into Lyft, Restylane, and Silk. These three products have good firmness, but little flexibility which means they are ideal for deep tissue areas that need strong structural support, but don’t experience much movement.

Silk has the smallest particle size (think powdered sugar) but still maintains a medium firmness which makes it a good product for use in the lips and the fine lines around them.

Lyft has the greatest firmness and largest particle size (think sugar cubes) and is ideal for areas that need strong structural support like the cheeks, deep facial lines, and the backs of the hands. The effects of Lyft create a very pronounced lift. Think of it like mimicking bone structure instead of soft fat pads.

Restylane falls in between these two (think granulated sugar) and is indicated for smiles lines and the lips.

XpresHAn technology refers to the product’s flexibility. It is incorporated into Defyne, Refyne, Contour, and Kysse.  These four products retain a high amount of flexibility, which means they can be stretched without “breaking”. This high flexibility lends to very natural facial movements.

Restylane Kysse with syringeKysse is the newest product in the Restylane® family. It has been used in Europe for several years but was only introduced to the US market in 2020. It is specifically used for lips. Kysse has a lower firmness but is very flexible and is the only lip filler to have studied partner satisfaction. In fact, 9 out of 10 partners report being satisfied with the feel of Kysse. Kysse also improves lip texture and slightly increases pinkness of the lips.

Refyne is the most flexible product of the Restylane® family which makes it ideal for use in the lines that run from the corner of the nose to the mouth (the Nasolabial folds) and the lines that run around the mouth to the chin (the Marionette lines). Its high flexibility means in moves with the skin in these high-movement areas, so your smile still looks like your smile.

Contour is especially good at contouring, meaning it creates definition and shape. It has a medium flexibility but larger calibration which means it is strong but flexible.  This makes it ideal for use in the cheeks to restore lost volume due to aging, while still retaining natural facial movement. The flexibility and softness of Contour mimics the natural fat pads of the face.

Defyne falls in the middle of everything, making it the most versatile Restylane® filler. It has the least flexibility of the XpresHAn products but has the greatest firmness. It is ideal for treating deep laugh lines (Nasolabial folds and Marionette lines) as well as enhancing chin projection.

The filler that is best for your needs depends on several factors including: your individual sun exposure and sun damage history, your individual skin elasticity, and your specific treatment desires. Keep in mind that the filler that worked for your friend may not be the best option for you, and your injector will recommend the best product to suit your needs.
